Guide to mobility scooter dimensions, size and weight

James Taylor | 02 Jul 2025

Understanding mobility scooter dimensions is crucial for ensuring your chosen model fits your lifestyle, storage space and usage needs. This guide breaks down the key measurements across different scooter categories to help you make an informed decision.

Size and weight

The dimensions, weight, load capacity and turning radius should be advertised in the specifications of any individual scooter. However, if you’re just starting out in your search, it’s helpful to know the rough dimensions so you know what category you should be looking for. That way, you can start your search based on the size of your car boot, hallway, door etc., and how much you can lift.

We’ve given two tables – unfolded size and folded or dismantled size, for transportation or storage. For scooters that can be taken apart, we’ve shown what is typically the heaviest individual component. Note that these are average measurements, and some models will be bigger, smaller, lighter or heavier.

Key mobility scooter dimension for reference

  • Door size: Most UK doorways are 76–81 cm wide. Standard scooters at 55–65 cm width provide enough clearance, but always measure your specific doorways, especially internal doors and bathroom entrances.
  • Storage space requirements: Consider not just the scooter’s dimensions but also space for manoeuvring. Add 20–30 cm to each dimension for comfortable storage and access.
  • Vehicle transportation: For car transport, measure your boot opening height and depth. Many boot scooters are designed to fit in cars with boot openings as small as 60 cm high, but heavier models may require lifting aids or vehicle modifications.

Choosing the right size of mobility scooter

  • For indoor use: Prioritize turning radius and overall width. Scooters under 60cm wide with tight turning circles (under 130cm) work best in homes.
  • For outdoor use: Larger wheels (25–35cm diameter) and longer wheelbases (the distance between the front and wheel axles) provide better stability and a smoother ride over rough terrain, but of course, that also means more storage space.
  • For travel: Boot scooters offer the best compromise between portability and functionality, though you’ll sacrifice some comfort and range for this convenience.

Space planning tips for mobility scooters

  • Before purchasing, measure your intended storage area, doorways and any lifts or ramps you’ll be using regularly.
  • Consider the scooter’s turning circle in confined spaces like shop aisles, care home corridors or your home’s narrowest areas.
  • Remember – compact scooters offer greater manoeuvrability and portability, but larger models typically provide more comfort, stability, carrying capacity and range.
  • Unless you buy more than one scooter for different uses, you’re always going to have to compromise on some features. If you do plan to own more than one, don’t forget about storage and charging needs.
